Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of NCTE (ALAN) Breakfast
ALAN kicked off their breakfast this morning by honoring members with awards, followed by a keynote by A.S. King, the critically acclaimed author of eleven novels for young readers, including Still Life with Tornado. Her work has earned numerous awards, including an L.A. Times Book Prize, a Printz Honor, and over fifty starred reviews.
General Session: Christopher Emdin
During this morning’s general session, Christopher Emdin, author of the New York Times bestseller For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood. . . and the Rest of Y’all Too and creator of #HipHopEd, electrified the audience with a keynote that challenged us to rethink our role as educators. He shared so many words of wisdom; below are just a few of them:
“You cannot give anybody voice. You recognize the fact that the voice lies within them.”
“The art of teaching is the art of the remix; it’s the art of reimagining.”
“When you put the work out the way it’s supposed to be and you’ve emptied, someone that you touch will be replenished.”
NCTE Awards Presentation
Each year at NCTE, we give awards to shine a light on the exceptional work of NCTE educators and students. These awards offer an opportunity to elevate what makes the teaching and learning of English language arts so powerful. Congratulations to all of this year’s award winners (you can see them here).
Children’s Book Awards Luncheon
At this year’s Children’s Book Awards luncheon, we were thrilled to celebrate outstanding children’s books and the important work of authors and illustrators. Dan Santat, recipient of the Charlotte Huck Award® for Outstanding Fiction for Children for After the Fall (Roaring Brook Press), and Jason Chin, recipient of the Orbis Pictus Award® for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children for Grand Canyon (Roaring Brook Press), captivated the audience with stories about their families, histories, and lives as writers.

Secondary Section Luncheon
During the Secondary Section luncheon, awards were presented and words of inspiration were heard from José Luis Vilson, founder and Executive Director of #EduColor and author of This Is Not a Test: A New Narrative on Race, Class, and Education.
College Workshop Session
This year’s college section workshop offered an immersive learning experience for college teachers. The event featured an awards presentation, a keynote address from Houston-area educator and activist Roni Dean-Burren, and a hands-on workshop in which participants developed action plans inspired by Dean-Burren’s approach to community engagement.
Book Signings at NCTE Central
Just in time for #NCTE18, the NCTE publications department debuted many new titles including Letting Go: How to Give Your Students Control over Their Learning in the English Classroom by Meg Donhauser, Cathy Stutzman, and Heather Hersey; Continuing the Journey 2: Becoming a Better Teacher of Authentic Writing by Ken Lindblom and Leila Christenbury; and many others. Ken and Leila stopped by NCTE Central today for a book signing in anticipation of the 2019 Summer Institute, an event that will help you rethink your role as a veteran English teacher.
