Background

In this resolution, members of NCTE protested the loss of “increasing amounts of instructional time” in language arts classrooms to standardized testing, state and locally mandated special programs, and extracurricular activities. They also noted the intrusion of clerical tasks upon teaching time. Be it therefore

Resolution

Resolved, that the National Council of Teachers of English reaffirm and publicize its position that time designated for preparation and instruction in English language arts not be usurped by imposed tasks and activities not specifically related to the English curriculum.
