1979 NCTE Annual Business Meeting in San Francisco, California
Ruth Crymes, a leader in the National Council of Teachers of English, President of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and past editor of the TESOL Quarterly, was killed in a plane crash on October 31, 1979, en route to a TESOL meeting. Ruth Crymes devoted her life to the advancement of the study of language and learning and to making academic issues related to language and culture come alive for her students and colleagues. Her belief in the legitimacy of the linguistic and cultural roots of individuals and her dedication to continual learning and questioning was a model for those in her own and in related professions. Be it therefore
Resolved, that the Executive Committee of the National Council of Teachers of English extend its deepest sympathy to the TESOL organization on its extraordinary loss and explore ways to commemorate the life and work of Ruth Crymes.
