The Writing Process: Editing

We are in the last week of October! The widespread enthusiasm for and participation in last week’s National Day on Writing was wonderful! Let’s close out this month together, looking at steps in the writing process, supported by resources from NCTE and ReadWriteThink.org

After revising, what are some techniques that can be used to edit or polish writing?

  • Student Printout “Editing Checklist for Self- and Peer Editing”—This helpful tool will give your students the opportunity to edit their own writing and then observe as their peers edit the same work.
  • Lesson Plan “Peer Edit With Perfection: Effective Strategies”—Students take a fresh look at the revision process and help one another polish their written work through a peer-editing strategy that is simple, systematic, and constructive.
  • Activity Plan “How to Revise and Edit”—Once a piece of writing has been revised and major changes have been made, writers edit to make certain that readers won’t be confused or distracted by unintentional errors. Read on to learn how to begin editing a piece of writing!
  • Activity Plan “Help a Child Edit and Revise”—Help children make the most of their writing by teaching them about revising and editing, two important parts of the writing process.
  • Minilesson “Peer Review: Narrative”—This minilesson guides students in using the PQP technique—Praise, Question, Polish—to offer concrete and useful peer review feedback.
