Nell Ann Pickett Service Award

Award Details

The Nell Ann Pickett Service Award is granted each year to an outstanding teacher whose vision and voice have had a major impact on two-year college professionalism and whose teaching exemplifies such outstanding personal qualities as creativity, sensitivity, and leadership. The award, presented at the annual CCCC Awards Ceremony, consists of a plaque and free registration to that year’s conference.

The award is based on an application of no more than two double-spaced typed pages, a current vita, and the following criteria:

1. Major impact on two-year college professionalism.
2. Service qualifications:
   Positive contributions to professional leadership with a clearly national reach and an inclusive vision demonstrated in such activities as mentoring, publication, or work uniting the goals and efforts of organizations and groups that promote two-year colleges.
3. Teaching qualifications:
   Demonstrated past or present excellence in teaching which exemplifies such outstanding personal qualities as creativity, sensitivity, and leadership.

Nominations:
Any person may nominate a service award candidate who meets the qualifications by sending an application of not more than two double-spaced typed pages and a copy of the candidate’s current vita. The selection committee may request other supporting materials.

Nominations must be submitted electronically, no later than January 1, 2024, to tyca@ncte.org.

2023 Recipient

Jeffrey Klausman, Whatcom Community College

Over the course of his teaching career, Jeff Klausman has had a powerful impact on the field of education. His tireless work as a teacher-scholar-activist has inspired countless faculty, to say nothing of the impact Jeff has on the students who are fortunate enough to be in his classes.  He is a staunch advocate for the professionalism of two-year colleges and, as one individual noted in their nomination letter, Jeff is a regular contributor to TETYC and “has advanced two-year college scholarship, particularly in the areas of two-year college writing programs/writing program administration and writing assessment, including writing placement.”  Jeff’s work with the (De)Composing ENGL& 101 initiative and the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) to study and work towards improving first-year writing outcomes, in particular a push for antiracist assessment practices and reforms, is just one example of his dedication to equity in our profession. Outside of his advocacy and work at the local and state levels, Jeff is a leader in the TYCA-PNW region, as well as at the national level with TYCA, CWPA, and CCCC, where he speaks for the vision and vibrancy of two-year college work. As one nominator said, Jeff is someone who “lead[s] by example, lead[s] by building up those around him.” His impact is felt on so many levels, and our profession is the better for it.
